January 17, 1901

Mr. Jas. J. Anderson was accidentally shot and killed Monday near Malvern, the accident resulting from the careless handling of a gun by John Garver. Mr. Anderson formerly resided in Silver City, then at Malvern and has been running a saw mill for some time past. He was in Glenwood one day last week shaking hands with old friends and acquaintances. He was a gentleman of high character and many excellent qualities and his untimely taking off is the cause of the deepest regret to all concerned.

Tuesday’s daily Nonpareil had a fairly full account of the casualty as follows: “A very sad accident today resulted in the death of James J. Anderson of this place. Mr. Anderson, with his stepson Lyle Mackalo, had gone this morning about 9 o’clock, to a point about five miles south of Hillsdale, where they were running a sawmill, arriving at their cabin near the mill, where they kept “batch” during the work days of the week, about 11 o’clock. As it was so near noon Mackalo commenced preparing the noonday meal, while Anderson chopped some stovewood near the cabin door. While thus engaged Lyle heard a gunshot and his stepfather cry out and going to the door, saw Anderson walking in a small circle, holding his hands over his heart, while a young man, John Garver, was seen coming out of some weeds with a shotgun in his hand. Lyle and Garver helped Anderson into the cabin, where he expired almost immediately. As they were helping Anderson into the cabin, he said: “Young man, you should be more careful with your shooting,” and then said, “I am getting blind.” These were his last words. Garver, with a man named Orton, were out hunting rabbits and young Garver shot at a rabbit, but shot Anderson instead. Eight No. 1 shot struck him, two over the heart, the others being scattered over the abdomen, arms and hands.

Mr. Anderson leaves a wife, stepson and an adopted daughter.”
