Irene V. Harris, 88 Red Oak

Irene Verona Harris, 88, of Red Oak, died Aug. 4, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak. Funeral services were held Aug. 7, 2004, at the Nelson-Boylan LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Pastor Steve McKinney officiated the services. Burial was at the Mamre Cemetery in Stanton.

Mrs. Harris was the daughter of Frank L. and Hilma (Falk) Anderson, born April 21, 1916 in Bethesda. She attended country school northwest of Bethesda and then moved to Poplar, Wis. She returned to Iowa at the age of 11 and attended country school north of Red Oak. She was baptized at the Bethesda Lutheran Church and confimed at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. She attended Red Oak Junior College after high school. In 1933, she was united in marriage to Virgil O. Johnson in Maryville, Mo. Their marriage was blessed with three children. She was employed by the Stanton Grocery until moving to Red Oak, where she was employed by the J.C. Penney Company in Red Oak, Shenandoah and Muskogee, Okla. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Harris in Maryville, and they made their home in Richland, Mo. Mrs. Harris later lived in Smithville, Mo., and Glenwood before moving to Red Oak to be near her family after suffering a heart attack. She lived with her grandson. She was a member of the Stanton American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. She was a participant in the Foster Grandparent Program at the Glenwood State School for many years. She volunteered for the Red Cross Drive and other civic duties through Senior Citizens in Glenwood. She was a dedicated worker making crafts for all occasions, and Bingo was a favorite pastime.

Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; brothers Dale, Ivan and Wayne Anderson; sisters Luella Anderson Chereck and Gayle Anderson Perkins; son Virgil Delaine Johnson; grandsons Keith Hudson and Cary Hudson; and son-in-law Roger Hudson. She is survived by daughters Jean Hudson of Hastings and Donna Morelock and husband Ron of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Vel Jean Edie and husband David of Red Oak, Roger “Chip” Hudson Jr. of Emerson, Gary Hudson of Red Oak, John Michael “Mick” Hudson of Hastings, Ronda White of Kansas City, Jackie Tucker and husband Doug of Houston, Texas, Donette Kenagy and husband Phil of Kansas City and Victoria Jones and husband Jeff of St. Louis, Mo.; seventeen great-grandchildren, Sean Edie and wife Kari, Dawn Weston and husband Colby, Dustin Edie, Shay Edie, Roger “Sonny” Hudson, Ill, Miranda Hudson, Cody Hudson, Tera Hudson, Makayla Hudson, Kaylie Hudson, Bran Putnam, Justin White, Jeremy White, Joshua White, Austin Tucker, Madison Tucker and Benjamin Maxwell; four great-great-grandchildren, Savannah Brielle Weston, Tavah Nicolle Weston, Lantana Jean Edie and Kate Renae Edie; sister Amy Burrington of Tabor; sisters-in-law Pearl Anderson of Stanton and Binnie Anderson of Kempner, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Hastings United Methodist Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
