GLENWOOD OPINION-TRIBUNE
DATED FEBRUARY 15, 1932:Funeral services for Eva Rupe, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Rupe of Pacific Junction, were held in the Methodist church there Sunday afternoon, with the pastor Rev. C. W. Cooper, in charge. The services were under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Raynor of the Raynor funeral home in Glenwood, and the body was laid to rest in the Glenwood cemetery.
Miss Rupe’s death occurred in a cabin in a tourist camp in Red Oak Thursday. She had been employed in Omaha and was visiting Wednesday in Red Oak with her sister, Mrs. Nate Lewis. While in company with other young people of Red Oak Wednesday afternoon she met Roscoe Riley, 27, of Gardner, Kan., and at present an employee of the Danielson dairy of Stanton.
An attendant of the tourist cabin camp said Miss Rupe and Riley, accompanied by another young couple of Red Oak, took this cabin about midnight Wednesday. When an attendant went to put the cabin in order about 3:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon he noticed Riley on the floor and the girl on the bed and went away, but when he returned about 5:30 o’clock that afternoon he smelled gas fumes and investigation revealed the two were in a serious condition.
Miss Rupe was remove to the Red Oak hospital where she died Friday morning after all efforts to restore consciousness had failed.
Riley was revived and taken to the county jail where he was held pending investigation, but was released Saturday after a coroner’s jury returned the verdict finding Miss Rupe’s death had been caused by asphyxiation.
