Harvey Dean, Head of Tri-County
Old Settlers' Association Dies
at Age of 84. Was Heavy
Land Holder

In the passing of Harvey Dean, who died at his farm home southwest of Glnewood last Thursday morning, this community lost another one of it's pioneers. Mr. Dean, who was 84, was the son of William E. and Susanna Briggs Dean, both of Barnard, Vermont. They came to Mills County, Iowa in 1849, entering a claim southwest of Glenwood, in what is now Lyons township. It was here that Harvey Dean was born November 15, 1853. He has resided through all the years of his entire life in that community and passed away on the farm which has been his home for over a half century and within a half mile of the place of his birth.

Mr. Dean was an energetic, conservative man. A farmer throughout all the years of his life, he worked hard and saved consistently, continually adding to his possessions until he became the largest landowner in western Mills county. His land holdings were said to have been in the neighborhood of 1500 acres.

Mr. Dean never married and traveled but little. He was a great reader and was well informed along many lines, as well as on current affairs. He was at the time of his death, president of the Old Settlers' Association of Mills, Fremont and Pottawattamie counties.

Mr. Dean retained his physical vigor and mental faculties despite his advanced years and his last illness was only of two days duration. He is survived by one brother, A. E. Dean of Glenwood. Two other brothers, Seth Dean and Benj. Dean, both of this city, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held in the Myers Funeral home Saturday afternoon with Dr. Frederick W. Long, pastor of the Glenwood Congregational church in charge. Music for the service consisted of vocal selections by Mary Evelyn Logan, who played her own piano accompaniment. The flower ladies were Mrs. Clarence Warren, Mrs. Jay Warren, Mrs. Charles Haynie and Mrs. Roy Wright. The pallbearers were Ray Wiles, Ernest Hutchison, Will Dean, Richard Groneweg, Wendell Lambert and Henry Dean.

The body was laid to rest in the Glenwood cemetery.
