OPINION TRIBUNE
DATED JULY 29, 1943:Funeral services for John Slaughter were held Sunday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at Raynor’s Chapel, with Dr. Frederick W. Long in charge. Music for the services was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Phelps. Those who had charged of the flowers were Mrs. Earl Harmon, Mrs. L. E. Chrisinger, Mrs. Harry Ranne, and Waunetta Slaughter. The pallbearers were Walter Ling, Frank Plumb, Parl Mickelwait, Roy Blackman, and Clifford Kelley. The following life sketch was read at the service.
John Elijah Slaughter, youngest son of Frederick and Mary Slaughter, was born on May 17, 1877, on a farm 3 miles north of Balfour, in Mills County, Iowa.
On February 14, 1910, John was united in marriage to Clara Vida Andrews. Three daughters and two sons were born to this union.
Mr. and Mrs. Slaughter started married life together on the farm 1 mile east of Hillsdale and this same farm has continued to be his home.
Mr. Slaughter was a member of the Hillsdale Methodist Church and was active in the church as long as his health would permit. He was a very faithful and congenial father to his children. Mrs. Slaughter passed away in 1922 and he continued to keep the family together until they had homes of their own. Fort the past 5 years Drayton and his wife, Ruby, have made a home for Mr. Slaughter and given him constant and loving care as his health declined.
On July 23, 1943, he passed away at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 6 days. He is survived by his children; Mrs. Janice Hunt of Malvern, John Drayton, Mrs. Virginia Jenson and Mrs. Ardis Pace, all of Glenwood and Theron of Aurora, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lucinda Emerine of Council Bluffs; two half brothers, Harvey of Henderson, Iowa, and Norval of Fresno, Calif.; 3 half sisters, Mrs. Clara Riley and Mrs. C. M. Bomber (sic) of Fresno, Calif., and Mrs. Phannie Walker of Malvern, Iowa.
