GLENWOOD OPINION TRIBUNE
DATED AUGUST 23, 1917:Frederick Slaughter died at his home place five miles northeast of Glenwood, Friday, August 17th at 1:40 a.m. as a result of infirmities incident to old age.
The funeral was held Sunday from the home, Rev. Sneath of the Baptist church of which he was an attendant being the minister-officiating. There was a large throng of neighbors and long time friends present to attest their friendship for the deceased. He was one of the best and kindest of neighbors and friends and was held in the highest esteem.
Frederick Slaughter, or “Fred” as his old time neighbors called him, was born in Ohio, September 11th, 1839. When quite young his father moved to Illinois and then later they came on to Iowa.
This was in the early 50’s, when they first halted in Mills County at the early settlement of White Cloud, and Miller George Haymaker was the first friend in Mills County they made. Soon after the elder Slaughter took up his home at the present place where his son Fred passed away last Friday. Fred Slaughter was perhaps the last man living in Mills county residing on the farm where the father had received the title direct from the government, breaking up the virgin prairie soil. The price paid the government was $1.50 per acre.
He entered the army at Glenwood in 1862 and served till the end of the rebellion. The children by his first wife, who was Mary Lutz, are Lucinda Emerine, Council Bluffs; Philip of East Center township; Jennie Emerine, Pendleton, Mo.; Mrs. Myrtel Bomar, who died in California six years ago; John, living near old Hillsdale.
His second wife was Mary Devore and the children are Arthur, Harvey, Norvel, residing on the home place; Clara of Lincoln; Mrs. Maggie Sever living south of Glenwood; and Mrs. Phaney Walker, Malvern.
It is recalled that his brother John died several years ago at Tekamah, Nebraska, aged just about the same, being about 79 at the time of his death.
