THE MALVERN LEADER
DATED MAY 10, 1923:PASSING OF MRS. J. E. SLAUGHTER
Beloved Resident of Center Township
Called to Her Long Home Last Thursday;
Funeral Services Friday Afternoon.We are sorry indeed to chronicle the passing of another of Mills County’s good women, Mrs. John Slaughter, who died at her home in old Hillsdale, following a long period of ill health. Our earnest sympathy is extended the bereaved husband and children.
The following account was given in the Glenwood Tribune on Monday’s issue:
After many months of suffering from cancerous affliction, the life of Mrs. John Slaughter ebbed out on Thursday, may 3, 1923. Every possible hope in her affliction was encouraged, and the best skill of physician and surgeon put to the test in order to prolong life. She had undergone two operations in hope of relief but it developed that the disease had gained and held the upper hand.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 4, at 2 p.m. from the Methodist church in Glewood, conducted by Rev. E. E. Goodrich. Music for the services was furnished by Charles H. Buffingotn, Mrs. John Sawyers and Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Parker, all former neighbors, and Mrs. Clyde Rhoads of Glenwood at the piano. The pall bearers were George Phelps, Rolla Warren, Will VanOrsdel, Fred Reasoner, Will Francis, Will Andrews. Burial was in Glenwood cemetery.
Vida Andews was born on the farm in Center township where she died, September 7, 1878, and died on May 3, 1923, aged 44 years, 7 months and 27 days.
She was united in marriage February 28, 1910, with John Slaughter. To this union five children were born, Janice, 12; Drayton, 9; Virginia, 8; Theron, 5; Ardith, 2. The husband and children survive her. Besides these she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Imogene Andrews, and a sister, Jennie Andrews, both of Los Angeles, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Edna Miller of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Dennis Suhr of Hillsdale. A sister, Mrs. Nina Lafoon, of Los Angeles, passed away in March of this year, less than two months ago.
It will be recalled by older residents that her father, Chet Andrews, was the victim of a railroad accident at Dead Man’s Crossing in 1900.
Mrs. Slaughter became a member of the Methodist Church in early life and remained so throughout her life.
