The following obituary is copied from the Nonpariel dated February 1991:

Howard “Doc” Kates, 78, of Pacific Junction died Thursday at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Kates was a lifelong Mills County resident. He was a switchman for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 36 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Boyd of Chatsworth, Calif.; two sons, Roland of Crofton, Md., and Randy of Pacific Junction; one brother, Henry of Terre Haute, Ind.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peterson Mortuary in Glenwood. The Rev. Nina Pulatie of the United Methodist Church at Pacific Junction will officiate. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
