Opinion Tribune dated June 14, 1951:

Memorial services were held Monday afternoon, June 11, from the Raynor Chapel for Mrs. Harold Kates who passed away at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha on Friday, June 8th. Rev. George O. Durkee officiated at the service and interment was made in Glenwood Cemetery.

Dorothy Durkee and Mrs. Glen Swisher sang several musical numbers with Mrs. Fred Picker as pianist. Casket bearers were: Gerald Rupe, Franklyn Raymond, Woodrow Cheyney, Harold Oswalt, Roy Perry and Willard Harris.

Mrs. Kates became ill in February and grew worse steadily. Three weeks ago she was taken to the hospital where she was given the best of attention and all was done for her that could possibly be done. She was 27 years, 6 months and 9 days of age at the time of her passing.

Mary Ellen Richardson, daughter of Gene and Katie Richardson was born November 29, 1923, on a farm west of Pacific Junction, Ia. She was one of a family of five children.

After completing the country school, she attended the Pacific Junction high school. On May 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Harold Kates. The couple began housekeeping in Pacific Junction and to them were born two daughters, Karon and Cheri.

She leaves to mourn her untimely passing, her husband, Harold of Pacific Junction; two daughters, Karon and Cheri; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Richardson of Pacific Junction; one brother, Claude Richardson of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Kates and Mrs. Kenneth Wilson, both of Pacific Junction and Mrs. Dwight Iles of Plattsmouth.

Mary was a good wife and mother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
