Funeral services for Norman T. Benedict, 92, of Glenwood, were Sept. 15, 1987 at Peterson Mortuary in Glenwood. The Rev. Clyde Harmon and the Rev. Ross Boyce officiated with burial at the Glenwood Cemetery.
Benedict was born Dec. 9, 1894 in Council Bluffs. He died Sept. 11.
Norman grew up on a farm south of Glenwood. In 1917, he entered into active service for his country and received his training at Camp Mills in New York.
Upon completion of his basic training, he ws sent to France where he participated in several major battles of World War I.
It was during this time of service that he was gassed and after spending some time in hospitals, he was shipped back home.
For his faithful service, he received the Victory Medal with several battle bars; a Purple Heart, and was included in the citations received by his compay during some of their grueling campaigns.
In Dec., 1920 he married Sylvia Gladys Boyce. They resided on a farm near Glenwood for a short time. They then moved to Lincoln, Neb., where he attended the school of agriculture, specializing in poultry husbandry.
After completing his schooling he was in the poultry business for 14 years. He then took up farming near Glenwood and later in other parts of Mills County.
Benedict and his wife had three children. Norman was converted and baptized at the Burr Oak Church south of Glenwood. For years, he was a member of the Baptist Church where he was still serving faithfully at the time of his death.
He was a Sunday school teacher, a Sunday school superintendent, a Deacon and a Deacon Emeritus.
After leaving the farm and moving to Glenwood in 1947, Norman took up paint contracting and light carpentry. He loved doing these things with his own hands.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; one son, Duane Benedict; two daughters, Gladys Allensworth of Malvern and Viva Miller of Silver City; two sisters, Mrs. Alonzo (Cecil) Krecklow of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mrs. Jay (Ruth) Doyle of Bolivar, Mo.; six grandchildren and eigh great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Darrell Sargent, Bill Sargent, Don Sargent, Dale Harper, Lyle Hansen and Dale Smith.
