The Mills County Tribune 7 December 1899

Died--Kelley, some five miles north of Malvern, Mills county, Iowa. Mr. John S., aged 60 years, 3 months and 1 day, after some three months illness, suffering from the effects of the bursting of a blood vessel in the brain, on Friday Nov. 24th, 1899, at 9:15 a.m. after a life of active usefulness.
At the age of 16 years, he came with his parents from Vienna, Johnson Co., Ills, to this county, and was among the pioneer settlers of Mills County. Was married to Miss Jane F. Wiatt, April 5, 1868, and to them were born five sons, and two daughters, three of the sons, Charles, John and Cleveland, and the daughters, Blanche and Leeta, with their mother, four brothers and one sister remain to mourn him. Two of his sons, William and Ray, also two of his brothers, Frank and Parley P. having preceded him to the realm beyond the shadowy borderland. The brother and sister remaining are William H. and Edmond L. of Lamoni, Iowa, Geo. T. who lives in Northern Nebraska, James M. of Macedonia, Mills County, and Mrs. Mary J. Ryerson, now residing in Clay County, Iowa. John was one of the honorable men of the community, and was re-elected township trustee during his final illness. A man of liberal views religiously, a loving husband, and affectionate father, a kind and generous neighbor and respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held at the Liberty M. E. Church on Sunday Nov. 26, and was largely attended, the church not being large enough to accomodate but half of those attending. The sermon was preached by Elder C. Scott of Lamoni, Iowa, the basis of remarks being the words of St. Paul found in First Cor 15 19 22. C. Scott Lamoni, Iowa
