MCCONNELL AND MERRIMAN

"Marshalltown people generally were saddened Sunday morning to learn of the death of Mrs. Sarah McConnell-Merriman, who had been ill for the last week. Altho her illness was of a serious nature from the start, she was doing so nicely that friends had ceased to feel much anxiety regarding the outcome.
A week ago Saturday, Mrs. Merriman suffered a strangulated hernia, for which she was operated on that day. The operation was apparently quite successful and the patient was announced as doing very well. Friday night, septic peritonitis set in, and she gradually grew worse, until death relieved her sufferings at 10:30 o'clock Saturday night.
Mrs. Merriman was one of the best-known women of the city, having resided here many years, and it can truthfully be stated that among her acquaintances she was not known to have one single enemy. She was in every sense a home woman, and her life has been one of devotion to that home and her children.
Sarah McConnell was born in Springfield, IL, December 20, 1851, spending her girlhood days there. In 1874, she was married to S.W. Merriman, who, in 1879, came to Marshalltown with his wife and family. In the early 80's, Mr. Merriman became associated with the Times-Republican Printing Company, as manager, being identified with the property about 10 years. Mr. Merriman's death occurred April 16, 1899, at Spring Valley, IL.
Mrs. Merriman is survived by one son and three daughters. Mr. Lee Merriman (Note: Willis Lee Merriman), of Spring Valley, was summoned home on account of his mother's illness, a week ago, and was present at her bedside at the time of her death. The daughters, Mrs. Park Bentley, and Misses Elsie and Gertrude Merriman, reside in this city. Mrs. Merriman's Father, Mr. A.B. McConnell, who has made his home in this city with his daughter, survives her; also four brothers and one sister - Mr. Will McConnell of Springfield, IL; Mr. Frank R. McConnell of Cuero, TX; Mr. Richard McConnell (Note: Belive this to be Andrew Richard or Andrew D. or A.R.) of Little Rock, AR; Mr. Edward McConnell of Chicago; and Mrs. Will R. Webster (Note: Sarah McConnell's sister Augusta McConnell) of this city.
The funeral will be conducted from the family home, 201 South Fourth Street, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A.F. Russell, of the Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased was a member.
Interment will be in Riverside."
