MISS BROADHEAD DEAD

End Comes to Well-Known Resident of City After Long Illness

After an illness of eight weeks, due to heart disease, Miss Martha Broadhead, a well-known resident of this city, and for over thirty years connected with the dry goods trade in Marshalltown, died at 9 o'clock this morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. Emma Speers, 201 North Center street. Miss Broadhead had been failing in health for about a year, and in July suffered an attack of heart disease that proved serious. She rallied from this, however, but was again stricken eight weeks ago and has since been bedfast. Altho friends had realized for days that the end was not far distant, Miss Broadhead's death brought sorrow into many local homes. Miss Broadhead was widely known and generally admired for her many womanly qualities. Almost continuously for twenty-five years, she had been connected with one dry goods firm, and her acquaintances in this city and its trade territory were practically numberless. Miss Broadhead entered the employ of the late E. Lee in 1886, and had since been with the same store thru the successive ownerships of Lee & Britnall. Prior to entering Mr. Lee's employ Miss Broadhead had worked for about three years for Gold & Baum, a dry goods firm in the building now occupied by the Colonial theater. Martha Frances Broadhead was a native of Panama, N.Y., where she was born Dec. 18, 1859, the youngest daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Hollis Broadhead. The family moved to this city in 1868, and Miss Broadhead had lived here ever since. She is survived by three sisters and one brother, in the persons of Mrs. S. R. McLeran, of Boise, Idaho; Mrs. Emma Speers and Mrs. T. L. Wasson, of this city; and Charles E. Broadhead, of Paris, Tex. John Broadhead, the father, died Dec. 6, 1907, and Mrs. Broadhead died Dec. 21, 1885. Funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs. Emma Speers, 201 North Center street, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. R. B. Davidson will officiate.
