Hastings resident Donald R. Smith, 67, of 1308 N. Baltimore Ave. died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at his home. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Smith was born Dec. 16, 1932, to Solomon and Ruth (Davis) Smith in Marshalltown, Iowa. He graduated from Marshalltown Senior High School in 1951. On April 5, 1957, he married Jean Setzer in Marshalltown. He served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War for three years. He retired from Dunham Bush Manufacturing Co. in Marshalltown and moved to Hastings in 1988. He worked for Marshalltown Instruments for a short while in Hastings, where he was a supervisor in the shipping and receiving department. He was a former member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Durham Bush Employees Credit Union, all in Marshalltown. Survivors are his wife; one son, Michael of Hastings; one brother, William of Marshalltown; three sisters, Mary Jane Calkins and Betty Smith, both of Marshalltown, and Dorothy Hill of Laurel, Iowa; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Memorials may be given to the Mary Lanning Hospice in Hastings.
