On-Line Obituaries

Steven Richter Gillam, 47, died on Sunday, June 13, in his home in Des Moines, a week after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Mr. Gillam was born in Marshalltown July 15, 1956, to Elise Christine Richter Gillam and John Speers Gillam. He grew up during the Baby Boom era in a neighborhood crowded with children, graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1974. Mr. Gillam was a cook in Marshalltown and Iowa City before settling in Des Moines in 1987. In Des Moines he worked at Babe's, Christopher's and Michael's restaurants. Colleagues valued Mr. Gillam's reliability and wry sense of humor. A voracious reader, Mr. Gillam was an animated conversationalist. Yet he was a very private person. Beyond work and a close circle of friends he had no affiliations other than a devotion to his dog, a Chow Chow who died earlier this year. Mr. Gillam is survived by a sister, Christine (Mrs. Mark) Austin of Rockford, Ill.; two brothers, Matthew Gillam of Queens, N.Y. and Patrick Gillam of Lyndeborough, N.H.; two nieces and two nephews. A memorial service for Mr. Gillam will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 21, at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, in Des Moines. A lunch reception will follow, the location of which to be announced at the service.
