Leonard Albert Gummert, of Salina, son of Albert Gummert and Avis Snyder, was born July 23, 1935, in Marshalltown, Iowa, and died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at the age of 79 years, one month and 26 days. Leonard was baptized at Dillon Lutheran Church, Dillon, Iowa, where he was also confirmed. He was raised on the family farm north east of Marshalltown. He received his education through the eighth grade from the rural community school at Ferguson, Iowa, close to his rural home. Leonard was united in marriage to Sharon Elsie Freiberg on Feb. 10, 1956, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marshalltown. He worked at an implement dealership in Marshalltown for several years, which then began about a 30-year span of working for several different farmers in the Marshalltown area. In 1988, he began a 10-year career with Security Bank in Marshalltown, retiring in 1998. At that time, Leonard and Sharon moved to Salina, to be close to their oldest son, Dave, and his family. Leonard then worked part time at Southgate Dillons store until his health forced him to retire again. He continued his hobby of woodworking, furnishing numerous toys, games and puzzles to Heartland Head Start and Sunflower Adult Daycare, both located in Salina. Preceding him in death were his daughter, Donna Jane Klinefelter; his parents, Albert and Avis Gummert; and his sister, Betty Bennett. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; sons, David Dean (Kathy) Gummert and Gary Allen (Dorie) Gummert; daughter, Dianne Elaine (the Rev. Dr. Michael) Bingenheimer; brother, Dale (Barb) Gummert; sister, Delores (Azmi) Hajjaj; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 111 W, Magnolia, Salina. A private family inurnment will be at a later date to take place in Marshalltown. Memorials may be made to the church.
