EARL H. NYCE, 55, PROMINENT BANK CASHIER, DIES SUDDENLY

Earl H. Nyce, 55, cashier of the Fidelity Savings bank, former city councilman and school board member and prominent in business, political, sports and social circles in Marshalltown, dropped dead about 8:30 this Tuesday morning at the bank where he had just started his day’s duties. Death was presumed due to a heart attack. Mr. Nyce had been in his usual health except that he had complained of not feeling too well the last few days, tho he had not considered himself ill enough to consult a physician, members of his family said. He was at the bank at his usual time Tuesday morning when he was stricken and was dead before a physician could reach him. LONG IN POLITICS Long in city politics in Marshalltown, he held a seat on the city council from 1923 to 1939, except for one term, 1933-35, and never was defeated. He was first elected in 1923 to represent the old Second ward, became Sixth ward councilman in 1924 when the wards were revised and represented that precinct until 1927 when he became a candidate for one of the two seats of councilmen-at-large. He was elected and served until 1933 when he retired. He returned to city politics in 1935 and served two more terms, retiring again in 1939. Before his career as a councilman ended, he entered school district politics; was elected to the Marshalltown school board in 1937 and served two terms, retiring in 1943. In 1942 he served as vice president of the board. He also was past commander of the Frank Lewis Glick post of the American Legion here, serving in 1944-45, and was a charter member of the local post. At the time of his death he was finance officer and a member of the board of trustees of the post. Likewise, he was active in Voiture No. 566, 40 & 8 society of the Legion, and was past correspondante of the society. WITH BANK SINCE 1910 Mr. Nyce had been with the Fidelity Savings bank continuously since Jan. 15, 1910, except for his service in the army in World War I. He was assistant cashier for a number of years and was elected to the post of cashier Nov. 19, 1942. He also had been a director of the bank for several years. Inducted into the army July 24, 1918, he was sent to Camp Pike, Ark., where he qualified for infantry officer’s training school and was in that training when the war ended. He was discharged at Camp Pike Nov. 14, 1918. He also served as city treasurer from 1921 to 1923; was a long time member of Marshalltown lodge No. 312 B.O.P.E., serving as lodge treasurer since last April; was a member of Marshall lodge No 106, A.F. & A.M., and of Elmwood Country club. His church affiliation was Congregational. BORN AT BETHEL GROVE Early Nyce was born on the Nyce homestead in the Bethel Grove neighborhood, Feb. 9, 1891, a son of Howard Preston and Anna B. Nyce, grew up on the farm and was graduated from the Albion high school in 1909. As a young man he was prominent in athletics, particularly basketball and baseball, and continued his interest in sports thruout his life. He was prominent in city bowling circles for years. He attended business college in Marshalltown before entering the employ of the bank and married Laura Knutson at Osage, Sept. 4, 1917. She survives, as do their two daughters, Mrs. George Squire of St. Paul, Minn., and Virginia, a student nurse at Augustana hospital, Chicago, Ill. His father died in 1922 and his mother only last July. He also is survived by two brothers, Walter, a Liscomb farmer, and Leonard P. of Ottumwa; one sister, Hazel, who lives on the home place, and one grandchild. The body was taken the Estel funeral home pending completion of arrangements for the services.
