DR. SOUTHWICK DIES MONDAY AT DEACONESS

Dr. W. W. Southwick, 55, widely known Marshalltown physician who also had practiced at LeGrand and Montour, died at 3:40 Monday morning at the Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient for less than a week. He submitted to an operation for stomach ulcers last Tuesday and afterwards suffered a heart attack from which he failed to rally. Active in county and state medical societies and the Masons, Dr. Southwick was past president of the Marshall County Medical society, past president of the medical staff of the Deaconess hospital and secretary of the staff at the time of his death, and a former county coroner, serving in 1926. Dr. Southwick had been a member of the faculty of the Deaconess school of nursing ever since he came to Marshalltown and was the oldest instructor in years of service. BORN AT WHAT CHEER Born at What Cheer, Oct. 10, 1886, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse N. Southwick, William W. Southwick was educated in Penn academy, Oskaloosa, and was graduated from the medical school of Loyola university in Chicago, Ill. He first practiced at Montour and then at LeGrand until 1925, when he moved to this city. His first wife was Miss Anna Belle Simmons of Marshalltown, whom he married in 1909. Five children were born to them, one son dying in infancy, and Mrs. Southwick died March 16, 1931. He married Vera Lucille Clark of Algona, Nov. 17, 1933, and she died Oct. 18, 1936. His third wife was Miss Nadean Williamson of this city whom he married Nov. 24, 1938, and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, William Jr., a medical student in Philadelphia, Pa., and Robert at home; two daughters, Mrs. Harold W. Carlson and Mrs. Lowell Stehn, both of this city; three sisters, Mrs. A. T. Davis and Mrs. George T. Hawley of this city and Mrs. Howard Coleman of Oskaloosa; two brothers, Homer C. and J. Edward Southwick, both of San Diego, Calif., and three grandchildren. One sister and two brothers died in infancy. MASONIC AFFILIATIONS Dr. Southwick was a member of the Methodist church and the Twentieth Century club of this city and his Mason affiliations included membership in Marshall lodge No. 108, A. F. & A. M.; Signet chapter No. 38, R. A. M.; St. Alder commandery No. 30, Knights Templar; Za-Ga-Zig temple, Mystic shrine, Des Moines; Central chapter No. 67, O.E.S., and Madon shrine, No. 38, W.S.G. The body was removed to the Wagner mortuary, but funeral arrangements have not been completed.
