PHILIP F. BYRD IS BURIED IN RIVERSIDE

Funeral services for Philip F. Byrd, former Marshalltown resident who died Saturday at Versailles, Ohio, were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Estel Funeral home in charge of P. G. Dennis. Burial was in Riverside. Members of Marshall lodge No. 108 A.F. & A.M., I.O.O.F. Banner lodge No. 123, Marshall Rebekah lodge No. 40 and Carpenters local No. 112 attended the services. The Odd Fellows burial services were given at the funeral home, W. G. McAfee acting as noble grand, and J. M. Mohr, chaplain. Short services were held at 8 p.m. Sunday at Versailles conducting the Masonic services there. Pallbearers here were Ver Cox, N. L. Hicks, O. F. Sellers, Perry Sexton, Elmer Collins and J. C. Heidelbaugh. Attending the services from out of this city were Mrs. Byrd and Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Byrd of Versailles, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Byrd and Mrs. Wesley Byrd of Green Mountain; Joe and Irvin Shelton, Grundy Center; Mrs. Inez Melendy, Princeton and Mrs. Winifred Nelson, Des Moines. Mr. Byrd was born Feb. 16, 1867, at Versailles, Ohio, and came to Marshalltown about 40 years ago following the carpentering and contracting business. He worked on the glucose factory, the old alcohol plant and the Hotel Tallcorn here. He married Mabel Crabtree in Waterloo and after their marriage, they moved to Iowa City where he was engaged in the contracting business for three or four years before returning to Marshalltown where Mrs. Bryd died August 16, 1931. He later married Laura Costello, who survives. Also surviving is a brother, Herschel Byrd of Versailles, Oho. He was a member of Marshall lodge No. 108 A.F. and A. M., I.O.O.F. Banner lodge No. 123, Marshall Rebekah lodge No. 40 and Carpenters local No. 112. Mr. Byrd served as state president of the Iowa State Council of Carpenters from 1935 to 1937, and before leaving Marshalltown was business agent for the carpenters local and also served as treasurer for the carpenters and Odd Fellows.
