MRS. C. J. MOFFATT, ONLY WOMAN TO HEAD P.E.O. IN TWO STATES, DIES SUNDAY

Mrs. C. J. Moffatt, 415 North Ninth street, wife of the general agent of the M. & St. L. here and only woman in the P.E.O. sisterhood to head that prominent women's organization in two states, died at 2:32 a.m. Sunday at the Deaconess hospital where she had been a patient since April 12. Mrs. Moffatt was one of the early initiates of chapter BB, Marshalltown unit of the P.E.O., joining in 1899. She served as state president of the Minnesota P.E.O. sisterhood in 1914-15 and prior to that time served as Minnesota state treasurer and vice president. Returning to Iowa, she became state president of the Iowa sisterhood in 1924-25, earlier serving as state corresponding secretary. In 1938 members of the local chapter BB presented a mirror to the P.E.O. memorial library at Mount Pleasant, dedicating it to Mrs. Moffatt's service in that organization. Mrs. Moffatt was born Charlotte Frances Tiffany, Dec. 15, 1875, a daughter of Sarah Viola McDill and Arthur Smith Tiffany, near Union, Iowa. The family moved to Marshalltown in 1890 where Mrs. Moffatt was graduated from the Marshalltown High school in the class of 1894. Due to the death of her mother in 1895, she resigned her teaching position to assume the responsibilities of her father's home and the care of two younger sisters and a brother. On Sept. 1, 1897, she was married to C. J. Moffatt in this city. In 1904, Mr. and Mrs. Moffatt moved to Minneapolis, Minn., and due to business changes moved back to Marshalltown in 1919. Surviving Mrs. Moffatt, one brother and one sister, Arthur Tiffany and Mrs. Lura Ostdiek, both living in California. A son, born June 2, 1902, lived but a few weeks. A sister, Mrs. J. A. Wauchope, died in 1923. She was a member of the First Congregational church and the Twentieth Century club as well as the P.E.O. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Congregational church in charge of the pastor, Rev. B. J. Trickey. Burial will be in Riverside. The body will remain at the Estel funeral home until Tuesday noon.
