MRS. EMILY BEESON DEAD

Widow of Gen. B. A. Beeson Dies at Houghton, Mich.

Word received from Houghton, Mich., tells of the death Monday evening of Mrs. Emily Beeson, widow of Gen. B. A. Beeson, and a former well-known resident of Liscomb township and this city. Mrs. Beeson who was about 85, had been in failing health for several months, following a fall late last year in which she fractured a hip. Mrs. Beeson was born Emily Ulery, and was a native of Pennsylvania. She came to Liscomb township with her family as a girl and there was married to Mr. Beeson in April, 1864, when Mr. Beeson was home on his first veteran furlough from his service in the civil war. After the war Mr. and Mrs. Beeson lived on a farm in Liscomb township, later in Liscomb, where Mr. Beeson was in business for a time, and in 1877 came to this city, following the election the fall before of Mr. Beeson as treasurer of Marshall county. From 1891 to 1893 the Beesons lived in Des Moines, when Mr. Beeson served as state treasurer, and in 1897 they returned to Marshalltown, when Mr. Beeson was made quartermaster of the Iowa Soldier's Home. Mr. and Mrs. Beeson lived there until 1903, when they moved to Hampton, Va., where for a few years Mr. Beeson was treasurer of the southern branch of the National Soldiers' Home. Returning here in 1907, when Mr. Beeson became adjutant of the soldiers' home, he and his wife continued to make this city their home until the fall of 1915, following General Beeson's retirement from his position at the home. Mr. and Mrs. Beeson then went to Des Moines, to be with their daughter, Miss Martha Beeson, for many years a teacher in a Des Moines high school, and there General Beeson died Jan. 5, 1929. Last summer Mrs. Beeson and her daughter Martha went to Houghton, Mich., where the youngest daughter of the family, Mrs. Mae Coffin resides. Surviving Mrs. Beeson are three daughters and a son. They are Mrs. J. R. Hill, of Minneapolis, Miss Beeson and Mrs. Coffin, and Emmett G. Beeson, of New York City. An older son, Dr. Edward G. Beeson died here Aug. 15, 1901. Mrs. Beeson's body will reach this city Wednesday evening and funeral services will be held from the Estel funeral home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will follow in the family lot in Riverside.
