Alfred Rieck, 99, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2013. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 7 at 4 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines. Family will greet friends and relatives one hour prior to the service.

Alfred was born December 31, 1913, in Winona, Minnesota. He lived in Des Moines most of his life, working first for Rollins Hosiery Mill, and then retiring in 1978 from Frye Copy Systems. He also worked as a cook for Wee-Care Center and was active in the United Paper Workers Union.

Alfred was a veteran of the Army Signal Corps and spent 36 months in the South Pacific during WWII. While serving his country, he met his future wife, Mona in Auckland, New Zealand. He loved jazz, the Atlanta Braves, and reading.

Alfred is survived by his children, Alan Rieck, Carol (Tom) Randall, Kaye Pebley, Joanne (Jim) Cory, and foster daughter, Kathryn (Andy) Chang; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mona; siblings; and a grandson, James.

Memorials may be made to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa 5 Mar 2013.
