BROKEN HIP IS FATAL; POWERS DIES TUESDAY

J. E. Powers, 85, widely known Marshall county resident, died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown where he had been a patient since breaking his hip in a fall at his home in Liscomb on April 10. While feeding his chickens, the aged man stumbled in the yard and was found in a helpless condition a short time later by his wife. Mr. Powers was a native of Ohio where he was born in Morrow county, Feb. 12, 1859. With his parents, John S. and Julia Powers, he came to Illinois when he was a boy of 10 and settled in Peoria county, that state. TO GILMAN IN '76 The family moved to the Gilman neighborhood in 1876, living just over the line in Jasper county near Union chapel. Subsequently, the young man returned to this old home in Illinois to be married on Sept. 27, 1883, taking as his bride Miss Addie Barrett. The day after the wedding they returned to Iowa and lived in the Gilman neighborhood for 17 years. In 1900 they moved to the Liscomb community and purchased the farm northeast of that town now owned by Sherl Clappsaddle. Later they moved to Liscomb where he operated a restaurant and later a meat market. In 1919 they moved to Marshalltown where Mr. Powers was engaged in business for nine years. In 1925 they returned to Liscomb. In 1933 Mr. and Mrs. Powers celebrated their golden wedding and in 1943 they observed their 60th anniversary. Both were charter members of Halo Rebekah lodge in Gilman and were prominent in I.O.O.F. and Rebekah circles in the county. Mr. Powers with his wife had also worked in the organizations of the Grace Reformed church at Liscomb. FUNERAL FRIDAY He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. J. E. Scott; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Etta Powers of Alden; three grandchildren, Mrs. Virgil Schewe of Marshalltown, Cpl. Ronald Powers of Camp Dodge and Mrs. Irma Wallace of Tucson, Ariz; three great grandchildren; three half sisters, Mrs. R. A. Clark, Liscomb, and Ella and Mildred, Long Beach, Calif.; and two half brothers, Wilbur of Long Beach and Clarence Powers of Rockford, Ill. One son, George, died in 1932. The body was taken to the Estel funeral home where it will remain until Thursday morning before being transferred to the home in Liscomb. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Christian church in Liscomb, preceded by a short prayer service at the home. Rev. George Biersborn will officiate. Burial will be in the Liscomb cemetery.
