WILLIAM MCAFEE, AREA PIONEER, DIES AT 94 AFTER LONG ILLNESS

William G. McAfee, 94, 7 Lackey Terrace, a Marshall county pioneer, died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Bowen. He had been in failing health for the last year and seriously ill since last Thursday. William Gilkerson McAfee was born Oct. 8, 1854 in Morgan county, Illinois, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth McAfee. The family came to Iowa in 1876 and he and his father-in-law, A. J. Laird, established the first warehouse in Green Mountain. Mr. McAfee also helped plot the town of Green Mountain and was in the grocery business there. Later he farmed in Marshall county and came to live in Marshalltown in 1919. Surviving are four daughters and a son, Mrs. Walter Kaufmann of Beaman; Mrs. Harry Appelgate of Ellsworth; Mrs. Virgil Branstetter of Milford, Bruce McAfee of Eldora and Mrs. Bowen. Also surviving are two half brothers John, Ft. Benton, Mont., and James of Vandalia, Ill., 23 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. One son, Charles, and one daughter, Elizabeth Belle Hill, preceded him in death, as did eight half brothers and six half sisters. He was a member of the First Congregational church, a 40-year member of Banner lodge No. 123 I.O.O.F., Crocker encampment No. 31, and Marshall Rebekah lodge No. 40. Services will be at the Estel funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Friday in charge of Rev. George Thomas. Burial will be in the Green Mountain cemetery.
