Marshalltown, IA [11-3-1948] p. 8WILLIAM R. DOWELL DIES IN 71ST YEAR; RITES SET FRIDAY
William R. Dowell, 70, 307 South Twelfth street, died at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday at the University hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient for the last week. Death was of carcinoma. He was born Aug. 19, 1878 in California, Mo., the son of Layton and Nancy Dowell. He grew to manhood there and came to Marshalltown in 1903. On April 7, 1932 he was married to Mabel Powlson in Lee county and they have always resided in Marshalltown. For several years he was employed at the Marshall Canning company, but for the last four years he had worked at Hotel Tallcorn. He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose. Surviving are the widow, 11 children and a stepdaughter, Hershel Dowell of Odessa, Mo.; Mrs. Era Woods, Eldon, Mo.; Marion Dowell of California, Mo.; Mrs. Ora Reel, Conrad; Layton Dowell of Gilman; Mrs. Della Borden, Colorado Springs, Co.; Mrs. Harold Van Sickle, Hillsboro, Ore.; Mrs. L. L. Winters, Mrs. William Shuler, Richard and Leo Dowell and Mrs. Charles Reeves, all of Marshalltown. Also surviving are two brothers, a sister, 46 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services will be at the Estel funeral home at 3 p.m. Friday in charge of Dr. Pieter Smit. Burial will be in Riverside.
