FRED LEROY CARTER DIES IN WASHINGTON

Word has been received of the death July 19 of Fred Leroy Carter of La Conner, Wash., a native of Marshalltown and former newspaperman. Carter learned the printing trade at the Times-Republican and after moving to Washington worked on the Puget Sound Mail, later serving as editor and publisher for 36 years. He sold his interest in the paper in 1925. He was married in 1888 to Georgia Hughes, a sister of A. Janney, Marshalltown merchant. Mrs. Carter died in 1945. As a boy Carter played ball with Billy Sunday and in later years when Sunday came to La Conner to deliver his famous temperance sermon, he was introduced by Carter. He leaves a daughter, Nellie Carter of La Conner and a son, George J. Carter of Seattle, Wash., and two brothers, Alf Stacey of Tacoma, Wash., and Ed Stacey of Bellingham, Wash.
