Flippings was taken to the hospital Friday noon when his condition became alarming and blood transfusions were resorted to in the afternoon in an effort to save his life. Mr. Flippings was being brought home from the Elks picnic, the night of Aug. 25, in a car driven by Fred Ritter, when the Ritter car ran into the rear of another car which had stopped suddenly in front of them, Flippings being thrown thru the windshield. Mr. Flippings was born at Staunton, Va., Jan. 21, 1864. In 1882 he came to Iowa making his home in the village of Muchakinock, where he remained until 1895, when he removed to this city. He was married at Centerville to Miss Nellie Burgess, and from this marriage a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Bell, Des Moines, survives. He was married a second time, in this city, to Miss Emma Judson, Jan. 13, 1896. There were no children by the second marriage. Five brothers and five sisters also survive but members of the family today were unable to give names and addresses of all. Richard Flippings, Mrs. Rebekah Cobb and Cora Flippings are in Atlantic City, N.J.; Mrs. Ella Patterson lives in Richmond, Va.; David Flippings in Burlington, and the addresses of two brothers, Norman and Paul Flippings, are not known. Mr. Flippings was a member of Eureka lodge No. 20, colored Masons, and Excelsior chapter No. 12 O.E.S. Before becoming custodian of the Elks building eighteen years ago, Mr. Flippings was in the employ of the late Henry Pappe. Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Estel parlor. Burial will be in Riverside and the Masons will have charge of the services at the grave.
