Carl August Johnson, 523 North Second street, a resident of Marshalltown nearly 60 years, died at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 2. Death was caused by pneumonia following an operation for gastric ulcers. Mr. Johnson was born April 10, 1858, at Skota, Dalsaland, Sweden, and came to this country in May, 1880, coming directly to Marshalltown where he found employment as a carpenter and later became a building contractor. He married Emma Sophia Carlson in this city in 1895 and she survives. He is also survived by two sons and three daughters, Dr. Carl Gilbert Johnson, Dr. Clarence E. Johnson and Miss Edna A. Johnson, all of Long Beach, Calif., Miss Esther A. Johnson of Omaha, Neb., and Miss Mabel E. Johnson of this city, and one grandchild, Carlene Johnson of Long Beach. He was the last of a family of 10, his last brother, Peter Johnson, dying in this city in 1926. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Estel funeral home in charge of Rev. Albert Tinberg. Burial will be in Riverside.
