Marshalltown, IA [12-15-1947] p. 5JOHN A. SMALL DIES IN LISCOMB AT 82; SERVICE WEDNESDAY
Liscomb----(Special)---Funeral services for John A. Small, 82, a retired farmer and business man of Liscomb who died at 3:15 p.m. Sunday at his home here, will be held at the Estel funeral home in Marshalltown at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. George W. Biersborn and Rev. T. M. Walton will officiate and burial will be in the Liscomb cemetery. Born Jan. 9, 1865 west of Union, the son of Jerry and Elizabeth Small, he had been a resident of this county since 1891 and of the Liscomb area since 1896. In the early 1880's Small went to Kansas with a covered wagon caravan with farmers of the Gilman and Union communities. On Sept. 22, 1885 he was married at Round Mound, Kan. When the Cherokee strip was opened he and his brother-in-law, George Elliot, made a run on horseback. Small got a homesite, filed on it but never proved up on it. He swapped the land to a school teacher for a horse and $30. He and his wife came back to Iowa and lived on farms near Gilman until 1896 when they moved to the Liscomb community. They resided on farms northeast of Liscomb, later coming to town, where he and his son were in the garage business for a number of years. He drove a school bus when horse-drawn buses were used and retired from driving four years ago. Small also operated a dairy in Liscomb. His wife, Ann, died May 21, 1933. He was married Sept. 30, 1936 to Mrs. Orilla Miller who died July 1, 1946. Small, active in civic affairs, was a charter member of the M.W.A. lodge and was active in the I.O.O.F. lodge. He is survived by three sons, Harry and James A., Liscomb, and C. J. of Hampton. A son died in infancy in Kansas.
