Civil War Veteran’s Widow Dies Here

Mrs. Hannah Diehl, a civil war veteran’s widow, died at the Iowa Soldiers home hospital at 7:30 p.m. Friday. She had been seriously ill for only the past few days. She was admitted to the home Sept. 16, 1941.

Mrs. Diehl was born Sept. 17, 1849 in Ogle county, Illinois, a daughter of Martin and Mary Rodermel. She was the last surviving member of the family of 10 children.

She was married to Andrew Diehl, Sept. 2, 1869 at Haldane, Ill. Mr. Diehl enlisted Aug. 27, 1862 at Oregon, Ill., serving in Company D, 92nd regiment. He was discharged June 21, 1865. Mr. and Mrs. Diehl came to Iowa in 1884, settling on a farm in Vienna township.

Mrs. Diehl was the mother of five children all of whom preceded her in death, Miss Bertha Diehl, Mrs. Ward Burt, Mrs. James Skuse, Mrs. Arilla Kleessie and Ellis Diehl, the latter dying in infancy.

Surviving are three grandchildren, Ivan Burt of Conrad, Kathryn and Lorraine Burt of Marshalltown. Nieces and a nephew living in Iowa are: Mrs. A. M. Crookshank of Bethel Grove, Mrs. Ada Frederick and M. J. Rodermel of Marshalltown. Mr. Diehl died July 13, 1928 at Conrad.

She was a member of the Methodist church of Conrad and was a life member of the W.C.T.U. During her earlier years she was active in all neighborhood affairs.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Monday afternoon at the Estel funeral home in charge of Rev. C. H. Van Metre, chaplain of the Iowa Soldiers home. Burial will be in the Green Mountain cemetery.
