W. D. Somers Died at Home Here Sunday

Wallace D. Somers, a resident of Conrad for the past 26 years, died at his home here at 4 o’clock Sunday morning. Death was due to infirmities of old age following a slight stroke which he suffered May 17. In spite of his advanced age, Mr. Somers had remained quite active until his final illness. On the day he was taken ill he had been out working in the garden.

Wallace D. Somers, son of Claude and Abigail Somers, was born in Barnet, Vermont, August 19th, 1851 and passed away at his home in Conrad June 9, 1940.

When he was 12 years old he came west with his parents and located in the Green Mountain neighborhood where he remained most of the time until he moved to Conrad 26 years ago. On May 11, 1910, he was married to Margaret Isenberg, who survives him.

In his younger years, Mr. Somers was a farmer, and later engaged in carpenter work. Mr. and Mrs. Somers took into their home and raised a nephew, Elmer Longman who also survives. A niece, Mrs. Bert Thomas, Clearwater, Florida and a nephew, Fred Nichols of Pasadena, Calif., are his only other close relatives. Three sisters and a brother preceded him in death and he was the only remaining member of his immediate family.

Mr. Somers was a member of the Presbyterian church. He was of a cheerful disposition and was always a kind and ready neighbor.

A prayer service was held at the home at 1:30 p.m. Monday followed by services at the Presbyterian church at 1:30. Rev. James Wray, pastor of the church conducted the services.

Pall bearers were E. R. Murphy, Clarence Hunt, Earl Poe, Mark Ralston, Will Schmidt and William Krumradt. The flowers were cared for by Mesdames Will Schmidt, William Krumradt and Lawrence Morrison. The music was provided by Mrs. George R. Gould and Mrs. Ben Frederick, with Mrs. Frank Dostal at the piano.

Interment was made in the Green Mountain cemetery.

Relatives from away who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Longman of Madison, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. I. R. Isenberg of Primghar; Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Longman and son George, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Miller and W. G. McAfee of Marshalltown and James and Robert Somers of Green Mountain.
