Gideon Francis Auringer

Gideon Francis Auringer was born October 2, 1832 at Onondaga, NY to Peter Isaac Auringer and Susannah Vroman. His nine siblings were: Angeline, Elizabeth, Bertha, Cordelia, John W., Freeman, Freeman Verone, Franklin and James A. He can be found in the 1850 census at Fabius, Onondaga, NY.

Gideon moved to Iowa with his family between 1850 and 1856. Gideon married Lucia J Hobart June 24, 1856 at Iowa; they had no children. The couple can be found in the 1856 and 1860 censuses at Albion, Marshall, IA. In 1856, Gideon was a painter, 23 years old, Lucia was 18 years old. In the 1860 census, Gideon is age 28, says Lucia is 21 (which should be 23). Lucia J Hobart was born 1839 at New York and died April 22, 1864 at Albion, IA. She is buried in the Albion Cemetery.

Gideon Francis Auringer married a second time to Sarah Sawyer (born November 24, 1832 Licking, Ohio to Sarah Farnham and Joseph Sawyer, died January 6, 1909 Albion, IA.) on August 25, 1866 at probably Marshall Co, IA. The couple had one son who was named Francis Gideon Auringer and born June 24, 1867 at Albion, IA.

Gideon, his wife and son appear in the 1870 census still living at Albion, Marshall, IA (copied without correcting spelling errors): Gidern Amager 37, Sarah Amager 37, Francis Amager 3, Ben Mcintire 15, Alice Mcintire 13 Elizabeth Tripp 39. (Sarah had first been married to a McIntyre, Ben and Alice were her children.)

Family next found in the 1880, 1885 and 1895 censuses at Marshalltown, Marshall, IA,:
1880 - Gideon Auringer 47, Sarah Auringer 47, Alice Mcintyre 23, Francis Auringer 13, Ida Ford 21, step-daughter Alice, age 23, living w/ the family. Gideon's occupation was listed as: barbs wire.

1885: Gideon F Auringer 53, (wife) Sarah Auringer 52, (son) Francis G Auringer 17.

Notes found said Gideon was a painter, glazier, and sign painter. He held membership in the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons at Albion. He was one of the first manufacturers of steel barbed wire and was one of a partnership of small-factory men who managed the barbed wire production in Marshalltown. His maternal grandparents came to this country from Holland and settled in New York.

Gideon Francis Auringer died September 19, 1900 at Marshall County, Iowa and was buried at the Albion Cemetery, Albion, Marshall, IA. Both of his wives are also buried there.

His son Francis Gideon Auringer married Mae Mabel Osman (born April 6, 1866 Cedar Rapids, IA, died 1944 Neligh, Nebraska) on May 18, 1892 at Marshalltown, IA. They had 3 children: Osman Francis, Marvin William and Marion Mae. Francis Gideon moved his family to Neligh, Antelope, Nebraska where he became a prominent businessman, owning and operating a Marble and Granite works and Monument Company. Francis Gideon Auringer died March 19, 1942 at Neligh, Nebraska.
