REV. H. C. HURD, GARWIN PASTOR, DIES SUDDENLY

Garwin --- (Special) --- Rev. Harland Corwin Hurd, 70, of the Church of Christ, died suddenly here Saturday morning. Twenty-three years ago he became ill of encephalitis from which he never entirely recovered, altho much of the time he had been able to get around on crutches and to fill the pulpit in the churches to which he and his wife have ministered. For the past eight weeks he had been confined to his bed but was so much better Saturday morning that he arose and dressed, but while walking from his room into the hall he collapsed and died almost instantly. FUNERAL TUESDAY Funeral services probably will be held Tuesday afternoon in the Church of Christ with Rev. J. A. Dillinger of Des Moines, Rev. P. G. Dennis of Marshalltown and others officiating. Rev. Mr. Hurd was the son of Wilson H. Hurd and Jennie Pay Hurd and was born Feb. 12, 1874, at Bennets Corners, Ohio. He received degrees from Westminster college at Fulton, Mo.; Transylvania college, Lexington, Ky.; Drake university, Des Moines, and the University of Missouri at Columbia, Mo. He continued to the end to be a deep student of science, philosophy and other subjects. At Manning on May 26, 1908, he married Miss Olive Long. Two sons were born to them, Dr. Frank W. Hurd, member of the national defense research council of Columbia university, and Lieut. Dr. Cuthbert C. Hurd, coast guard academy, New London, Conn. LONG SERVICE RECORD Rev. Mr. Hurd held pastorates at Moorhead, Pleasantville, Estherville, Irwin, Defiance, Sheldon and Rock Rapids, Iowa, and also at Donna, Texas. He and Mrs Hurd have ministered to the Garwin church since 1937. He had been a Mason for 38 years and his membership was still at Rock Rapids. He is survived by his widow, his two sons and two grandchildren.
