Area Pioneer Dies Tuesday at Age 85

Liscomb – (Special) – Finley Alvie Hilsabeck, 85, last surviving member of a pioneer Bethel Grove family, died Tuesday at Marshalltown Manor. He had been in failing health for the past few months.
Born January 25, 1884, in the Timber Creek area, he was the son of Solomon and Rebecca Fiscus-Hilsabeck. Coming to Bethel Grove at the age of eight, he had spent his entire life in the Liscomb vicinity. He was a farmer and, in his later years, a carpenter.
Second to the youngest in his family, he was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
He was married in 1908 to Edith Patton. They were the parents of seven children. She preceded him in death in the 1918 flu epidemic. Three children also preceded him, Edward, in 1949, and twin sons, Clyde and Claude in infancy.
In 1923 he was married to Jennie Thatcher Williams. She died in 1964.
Surviving are a son, Melvin Hilsabeck; Fayette, Missouri; three daughters, Mrs. Edna Morey, Brenham, Texas; Mrs. Minnie Curry, Marshalltown, with whom he made his home the past year, and Mrs. Nettie Jennings, Clemons. Two stepdaughters, Mrs. Orville Clark, Liscomb, and Mrs. Vera Steege, Waterloo; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Canada also survive.
Services will be at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Liscomb, the Rev. Helmer Peterson in charge. Burial will be in the Bethel Grove Cemetery. The Biersborn Funeral Home, Union, is in charge of arrangements.
