Times Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, Tuesday, February 23, 1904

Elias Hilsabeck, a pioneer resident of the county, died Monday at his home, at Ferguson, after an illness caused by chronic asthma, induced by the infirmities of old age. Had Mr. Hilsabeck lived until today he would have been 89 years of age. He came to Iowa in 1852, and settled on a farm near where the town of Ferguson now stands. In fact the town was built on a portion of his land, which adjoins the corporate limits. He has lived there ever since.
Mr. Hilsabeck is survived by his wife and seven children: Martin Hilsabeck, of Ferguson; David Hilsabeck, who lives in California; John Hilsabeck, of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. J. F. Fortner, of LeGrand; Mrs. James Finders, of Ferguson; Mrs. F. C. Manning of Perry; and Mrs. C. E. Hooven, of Chicago. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made, as word is being awaited from the son in California. The Masonic fraternity of Gilman will have charge of the burial.
