Carey Arney, 94, Of Albion Dies At Deaconess Following Stroke

Albion ---(Special) --- Carey E. Arney, 94, of Albion, Iowa township's oldest resident, died at 12:20 a.m. Friday at Evangelical Deaconess hospital following a stroke Thursday night. UNTIL HE became ill Monday night, Mr. Arney had been in good health and had gone regularly to the farm where his son, Joseph V. Arney, lives near Albion. Mr. Arney was interested in agriculture all his life. A member of the Marshalltown Kiwanis club, he was honored in 1949 as the oldest charter member of that group and the oldest active member in the Kiwanis membership of North America. HE SERVED as a member of the county board of supervisors from 1901 to 1907 and as township trustee and director of the Albion school board. He was an active member of the Bethel Grove Church of Christ. Mr. Arney was born in Iowa township April 13 1856, on the farm settled by his grandparents, John and Mary Arney, in 1849. ON FEB. 27, 1877, he was married to Jennie Miller. They lived at Manning 16 years. In 1893 they returned to Marshall county and settled on the Arney farm northwest of Albion where they lived for 25 years before moving to Albion. Mrs. Arney died in 1947. Surviving are three children, Nellie Arney, Mrs. Elma Springer and Joseph V. Arney of Albion, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, a brother, P. F. Arney of Marshalltown, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Crouse of the Bethel Grove neighborhood. Services are being arranged at the Estel funeral home in Marshalltown. Burial will be in the Bethel Grove cemetery.
