L. W. Hauser, County Pioneer, Dies Monday

LISCOMB --- (Special) --- L. W. (Lem) Hauser, 87, Bethel Grove retired farmer and a member of a pioneer family of Marshall County, died Monday of a heart attack at the family homestead four miles southwest of Liscomb. His father, John H. (Timber John) Hauser, built the first log cabin there the winter of 1849-1850 and the farm has been occupied by members of the Hauser family continuously since that time. Although Mr. Hauser had been in failing heath because of his age, he attended the Sunday morning services at the Bethel Grove Church and had been working about the barn lots earlier in the day. MR. HAUSER was born on the farm Feb. 26, 1868, and spent his entire life there, with the exception of three years when the family lived in Liscomb at the close of the Narrow Gage boom, in the late '70's. He was married to Miss Edith Nyce, Dec. 24, 1891, by the Rev. J. G. Encell, organizer of the Bethel Grove Church. Mrs. Hauser died July 9, 1950. BOTH MR. and Mrs. Hauser were prominent in the affairs of their community and of the Bethel Grove Church. He directed the music of the church for many years and he was elder and trustee for a long period of time. Two years ago he was elected to a lifetime honorary eldership. Lem Hauser was also well known as a bandsman. He commenced playing with the old Liscomb band in the late '70's and in 1883, at the age of 15 years, became the director of the Bethel Band, which was one of the famous musical organizations of its day. BESIDES HIS music, Mr. Hauser had two other hobbies, hunting and checkers He was the champion checker player of the Liscomb-Albion communities. The only survivors of the pioneer Hauser family of eight children are a sister, Mrs. Corena Brown of West Liberty, and nieces and nephews. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday from the Bethel Grove church with burial in the Bethel Grove Cemetery. The Estel-Perrin Funeral Home is in charge.
