EDWIN H. POWELL, OLD CONFECTIONER, DIES

Edwin H. Powell, for years a well-known business man of the city, conducting a confectionary and fruit store in South Third avenue, died Tuesday afternoon at his home, 118 1/2 North Center street, of carcinoma. Mr. Powell had been in failing health for several months and had been confined to his home in recent weeks.

Mr. Powell was born at Primrose, Sept. 25, 1860, a son of Norville and Margaret Powell. His early childhood was spent at Mount Pleasant and Richland.

In 1882 he enlisted in the regular army, serving for five years with the Third United States infantry at Fort Custer, Mont. He was honorably discharged at Fort Custer, Dec. 22, 1887, with the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Powell came to Marshalltown in 1895, where he met and married Mrs. Clara B. Harmon, the ceremony being performed April 6, 1898. In the same year he entered the confectionary business in South Third avenue. He continued in business for twenty-two years, retiring in 1920.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara B. Powell; a sister, Mrs. Ella Ferris, and niece, Margaret Ferris, of Seattle, Wash., and a niece, Mrs. Ethel Harvey, Portland, Ore. and nephew, Harry Smith, Toledo, children of a sister Mrs. Bell Smith, who passed away in 1931.

Mr. Powell was a member of the Methodist church, from which funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Sylvester E. Ellis, of Osage, a former pastor here. Burial will be in Riverside.
