Old Resident of Liscomb Township Dies at Rock Rapids

Mrs. Malissa A. Gately, for many years a resident of the Liscomb and Bethel Grove Neighborhoods, died at 2 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, Ray Gately, at Rock Rapids. Death was due to uremic poisoning, following an illness since Friday. Mrs. Gately was born Malissa Ann Weatherly, oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Weatherly, June 15, 1851, in Owen county, Indiana. The Weatherlys were pioneer settlers of Liscomb township, coming to Iowa in 1852, in a covered wagon drawn by oxen, when Mrs. Gately was a child of one year of age. She was married to Richard Gately, in Liscomb township, Feb. 10, 1878. She lived on a farm near Liscomb until seven years ago, when she went to live with her son in Rock Rapids. Mr. Gately died several years ago on the old home place. Mrs. Gately is survived by six children, Mrs. J. A. Egerton, Iona, Minn.; Ray and George Gately, Rock Rapids; Mrs. Maude Dent, Colville, Wash.; Mrs. Beatrice Hopley, Worthington, Minn., and Mrs. James Botts, city. Two sons, John and Floyd, are dead. Five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Sarah C. Bueghly and Mrs. Elmer Boyd, Liscomb; David W. Weatherly Bangor; John Weatherly, Doon, and George Weatherly, Nevis, Minn., and a foster brother, W. B. Lewis, Eldora, also survive. The body will be brought Friday to Liscomb for burial in the Liscomb cemetery. Arrangements for the funeral had not been made today.
