Willis K. "Bill" Bramwell Jr., age 82 of Marshalltown, passed away on February 16, 2009 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA. Visitation has been planned for 4-6 P.M., Thursday, February 19, at Pursel Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Mary Greeley Foundation in Ames, IA.
Bill was born on August 9, 1926 to Willis K. and Gladys Bramwell in Kansas City MO. He graduated from Andover Academy in Andover MA in 1944. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and his Masters degree from Columbia University. He also attended the London School of Economics.
He served as a sergeant in the US Army from 1944 to 1946 in the Pacific theater of WWII.
He married Betty Plass in Davenport, Iowa on March 19, 1956.
After finishing his formal education in economics, Bill returned to Iowa, settled in Marshalltown and began his banking career. After 25 years as a successful businessman Bill sold the Commercial State Bank to the Hawkeye Bank Corporation. The next 7 years of his career took him to Danville, KY as a professor of economics at Centre College, which included a year of teaching abroad in Bologna, Italy at the Johns Hopkins School of International Studies.
Bill enjoyed many sports and was an accomplished golfer, tennis player and snow skier. He was the first flight champion of the 1958 Iowa Amateur Golf Tournament and placed first in the 1975 men’s doubles tennis tournament sponsored by the Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Department. Bill possessed an amazing curiosity for life and the world around him and spent endless hours studying current economic theory, foreign languages, current political events and nutritional/health issues. He enjoyed playing the piano and the guitar and was a long time volunteer at the Central Iowa Art Association in Marshalltown.
Bill is survived by his wife Betty Bramwell and sons Bill (Leslie) Bramwell of Des Moines, IA, John (Lee) Bramwell of Eugene, OR.; grandsons Robert and Kevin Bramwell, granddaughters, Catherine and Emma Bramwell and his brother, Clark (Barbara) Bramwell of West Palm Beach, FL.
Bill has been preceded in death by his father, Willis K. Bramwell Sr. and Gladys Bramwell.
Bill will be missed deeply by his family and friends, he was an amazing husband, father and confidant. We know that the next chapter of his adventure will be equally amazing and that he will rest assured the country’s foreseeable political future is in good hands with the current White House administration.
