Mary Ann Waters, 78, of Marshalltown passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Grandview Heights after a courageous battle with Lung Disease in the loving care of her family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Miller officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday with a Rosary to follow at 8:00 P.M. at Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Mary Ann was born on July 30, 1930, to Albert Earl and Gertrude (Pletch) Rockwell. She was raised in Ponca, Nebraska. She graduated from high school in 1947 and came to Marshalltown with her cousin Shirley Doan (Rohrs) to attend LPN school at Mercy Hospital. She was a member of the 1st LPN class that graduated in 1949. She was most proud of being the first Vice President of the Iowa LPN Association. She married Carol Jeffrey (Jeff) Waters on October 23, 1950. Mary Ann worked her entire life as an OB nurse both at Mercy and Evangelical Hospitals in Marshalltown before retiring in 1979.Mary Ann will be remembered for the love of her family, friends, and all those who cared for her in her home. She loved to cook and bake and root for her favorite team, the Cyclones. She loved to sit on her front porch and care for all the flowers she would put out each year. She loved to sew with her special friends Audrey and Mary Ella. She enjoyed hanging out with the “Chain Gang”. She was a very active member of the local Arthritis Support Group for 11 years. She was also a member of St. Mary’s CCW.
Mary Ann is survived by her 4 children, Mike (Lori) Waters, Pat (Joan) Waters, Kathy Rabbitt, and Mary (Matt) Hasenwinkel and 1 daughter-in-law, Sue Waters. Her 11 grandchildren, Ely (Jeff) Mock, Katie (Zak Logemann), Ann (Chris Honeck), Zach (Amber), Colin, Jon (Jennifer), Janna, Matt, and Adam Waters, Paul Scott, and Jennifer Rabbitt. Her 5 step-grandchildren, Lindsey, Brian, and Kristen Aldrich, and Amber and Seth Hasenwinkel. Her 5 great-grandchildren, Anthony, Ethan, Jackson, and Joel Waters, and Charlie Randall. Her siblings, Maxine Iddings, Merle Rockwell, Bill Rockwell, and Jean Bottoroff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Bobby Rockwell, sister, Marge Hurley, her husband, Jeff, a son, Mark, a daughter-in-law, Toni, and a grandson, Levi.
