Mrs. Adkins, 86, Dies Wednesday; Rites Saturday

Mrs. Clara J. Adkins, 86, a former Gilman resident, died early Wednesday morning at the Marshall County Care Facility where she had lived since November 1975.

Services will be from the chapel of the Estel Purrin Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Donald Scheller, pastor of the Gilman Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born Clara Jane Ralls, January 31, 1891, in St. Joseph, Missouri, she was the daughter of James A. & Adeline Swick Ralls. When she was young the family moved to Marshalltown and she received her education in the Marshalltown public schools.

On October 23, 1912, she was married to James T. Adkins, and they had made their home on farms near Marshalltown and Gilman, until retiring to Gilman in 1959. Mr. Adkins died on December 26, 1963.

Survivors include 5 sons and 5 daughters: Doris (Mrs. James) Cagwin, Minerva; William Adkins, Gilman; James(Deb) Adkins, Eldon, Missouri; Adeline (Mrs. Fred Halthusen, Texas City, Texas; Tom Adkins, Laurel; Max Adkins, Mary
(Mrs. Wayne) Elsberry, Gwen (Mrs. Dale) Wall, Raymond Adkins and Joann (Mrs. Albert E. Wall), all of Marshalltown.

Also surviving are 35 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.

Mrs. Adkins was a member of the Gilman United Methodist Church.
