Pioneer Woman of Iowa Township Dies of Paralysis

Mrs. Mary M. C. Collins, widow of Thomas G. Collins and a pioneer woman of Iowa Twp., died at her home 408-1/2 N. 3rd St. Thursday afternoon at 5 o’clock of apoplexy.

Mrs. Collins suffered a stroke February 28th which affected her left side and forced her to her bed for several weeks. A second stroke July 19th caused her to lose her speech and from the effects of this second seizure she gradually declined.

Mrs. Collins was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Carter. She was born near Mooresville, Indiana, June 12, 1844, a birthright member of the Society of Friends. Her father died when she was seventeen years old and two years later the family moved to this county and settled on a farm in Taylor township. She was married April 4, 1867 to Mr. Collins and moved to a farm in Iowa Twp. where the couple lived until October of 1902, when they moved to this city. Mr. Collins died here September 10, 1913.

Mrs. Collins is survived by all her nine children. They are Mrs. Ruth H. Thoburn, widow of Rev. D. L. Thoburn a Methodist Missionary who died at Lucknow, India, 3 August 1905; Mrs. Myra H. Taylor, wife of H. E. Taylor of Bethany, Nebraska; Eugene T. Collins of St. Edwards, Nebraska; Mrs. Dora N. McKibben, wife of Frank McKibben, 408 N. 3rd St.; Lyman J. Collins, Clemons; Laura S. Veatch, wife of E. C. Veatch of Amelia, Virginia; Stanley B. Collins, a Y.M.C.A. foreign secretary stationed at Yunnan, China; Mrs. Bertha L. Bailey, wife of Rev. Ward E. Bailey, a Baptist Missionary at Yachow, China; and Edgar V. Collins of the Extension Dept. of Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa. One sister, Mrs. P. L. Collins of Taylor Twp. also survives Mrs. Collins. Another sister, Miss Anna Carter, died at Albion April 27.

Funeral services will be held from Friends Church in this city Sunday forenoon at 11 o’clock. The church will be open at 10 A.M. Burial in the Albion Cemetery.
