Wayne R. Wolgamott, 76, of Melbourne died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at the V. A. Medical Center in Des Moines.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne. Burial will follow in Melbourne Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Laurel American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. John United Church of Christ or the Laurel American Legion Post. Ryan Davis Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Jan. 17, 1923, in Antelope Valley, Garden County, Neb. to Guy and Estella (Wycoff) Wolgamott. He moved to Laurel in 1936. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1940.
He married Genevieve "Jennie" Petermeier on Dec. 31, 1943, in Laurel. He served in the Pacific during World War ll in the 24th Division first to land in Japan. He received Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one bronze battle star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, a victory medal, an Army of Occupation medal-Japan and a Expert Rifleman's medal. He farmed in the Laurel, Van Cleve and Melbourne areas, retiring in 1980 due to ill health. They moved to State Center for eight years where they managed Prairie Village. They moved to Melbourne in 1944.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Melbourne, Laurel American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Jayne (Mrs. Merle) Conkin of Fernandina Beach, Fla., two sons Robert and Mark, both of Melbourne; five grandchildren; two great grandsons, and a sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Clair) Erwin of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Merle.
