Dr. David D. Blaha, 90, of Marshalltown, died Saturday, February 2nd, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 6th, at the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Marshalltown with Rev. Mary Jane Oakland officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. David was born on February 8, 1917 in Whitten, Iowa to Dr. George and Helen (Davenport) Blaha. He attended school in the Whitten area, and then went on to college at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, graduating in 1942. David married Kit Bell on September 18, 1940, in Salem, IL. He served in the Army during World War II as Captain in the Medical Corps in the Pacific Theatre. He received the Bronze Star. Dr. and Mrs. Blaha moved to Marshalltown after the war. Dr Blaha had a dental practice in Marshalltown and retired in October of 1988. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Past President of the Iowa Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association Distinguished Service Award in 1990, University of Iowa President’s Club, University of Iowa Dental Alumnus of the Year in 1984, member of the American Dental Association, Waterloo District Dental Association, lifetime member of Marshalltown Elks, Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shiners, and Marshalltown American Legion, board member and Past President of the Marshalltown YMCA. David is survived by his children: Dr. David (Beverly) Blaha of Urbandale, Cathie (Dennis) Courtnage of Southport, NC, Robert(Susan) Blaha of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren David(Susan) Blaha, Jennifer Blaha, Robert(Karen) Courtnage and Andrew(Katrina) Courtnage, Robert and Rachel Blaha, Claire(Shane) Johnson, Kathryn, Lydia, David Zachariah, and Ben Blaha; great-grandchildren Benjamin David, Joshua, and Hannah Blaha; and brother Dr. Vernon”Bud” (Henrietta) Blaha. Dr. Blaha was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Paul’s Episcopal Church (Marshalltown).
