Grace B. Quigley, 91 of Marshalltown, entered into eternal life Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Villa Del Sol Health Care Center in Marshalltown. Her cremation rites have been entrusted to the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory and no public visitation is planned. There will be a public graveside memorial service at the Elmwood Cemetery in Lamoille at a later date. A memorial fund has been established. Born on April 30, 1916 in State Center, Iowa, Grace was the daughter of Fred and Susan (Gibson) Benson. She grew up in the State Center and Lamoille areas and graduated from the Lamoille High School. She was united in marriage to Ed Quigley in 1945 and the couple later divorced.
Grace’s hobby and passion was bowling. She was a 65 year member of the National Women’s International Bowling Congress. She was a member of: the Women’s Bowling Association - both National and the Iowa; the National 600 and the Iowa 600 Clubs; and, the Marshalltown 600 and the Iowa Hawkeye 600 Clubs. Grace qualified for and participated in 40 National Tournaments all over the U.S. and she has only missed 5 State Tournaments since 1945. She had bowled in all of the Marshalltown City Tournaments from 1946 until 1993 and she participated in the Iowa State Match Games from 1951 – 1976 – qualifying for the finals nine different times. Grace bowled in the Iowa State V.F.W. Tournaments since 1962. She was a 65 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Harry C. Harter V.F.W. Post #839 and she was a member of the Moose Lodge for nearly 30 years. She had bowled in 11 Iowa State Senior Tournaments until 1998. She has held all of the offices in many of the leagues and she bowled 3 or 4 times a week for many years. She was secretary in the Women’s Classic League for 32 years. In that league, she bowled for Pursel-Davis Funeral Home team for 31 years.
Grace achieved many awards throughout her bowling career. The Marshalltown Women’s Bowling Association inducted her into the Hall of Fame in 1974-75 and in 1988 she became a Member Emeritus.
She will be missed by her son, Stephen Quigley and granddaughter, Stephanie Quigley, both of Marshalltown and two sisters-in-law, Zola Benson of Marshalltown and Marian Quigley of Miami, FL and several nieces and nephews.
In eternal life, Grace joins her parents, two brothers, Carl and Clifford Benson and her sister, Ethel Dannen.
