Max V. Clements, age 90 of Glenwood Place, entered into eternal life Friday, January 11, 2008, at the Villa Del Sol Health Care Center in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 16th at the chapel of the Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 4 pm until 6 pm Tuesday at the Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church or the Iowa River Hospice. Born on December 8, 1917 in Grinnell, IA, Max was the son of Clarence and Maude (Wisecarver) Clements. The family moved to Marshalltown in 1925 where he completed grade school and junior high school. They returned to Grinnell in 1932 where he graduated from Grinnell High School in 1935. After graduation, he worked at Morrison-Schultz Glove Factory. In 1940, he and his family moved to Marshalltown where Max was employed at Fisher Controls. He entered military service in 1942 and completed Airplane Mechanics School and was assigned to the 342nd Squadron of the 97th Bombardment Group of the 15th Army Air Force. They operated in Algeria and Tunisia and were later based in Foggia, Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to the U.S. after 2˝ years of overseas duty. On November 10, 1946, he was united in marriage to Julia “Judy” Carlson of Des Moines. The couple has always made their home in Marshalltown. After more than 40 years of service, Max retired from Fisher Controls as a senior numerical control programmer.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on ushering committees and also on the church council from 1960-63. He was a member of the Harry C. Harter Post #893, the Frank-Lewis-Glick American Legion Post #46; and the 97th Bombardment Group Reunion Assoc. He was a member of the Noon Lions Club and received the George Coleman Award. He also volunteered at the Iowa Veterans Home from 1970–2000 where he received the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 1985.
He will be missed by his two sons, Gary (Julie) Clements of Denver, Co and David (Janet) Clements of Snohomish, WA; two grandchildren, Jenny (Ryan) Haldimann of Seattle, WA and Kyle Clements of Bellingham, WA; and a loving friend, Vone Lee of Marshalltown.
In eternal life, Max joins his parents and his wife, Julia “Judy” (December 4, 1994) and his sister, Marcene Clements.
