Robert Baker, 69, of 408 Main Street, LeGrand, died Friday, February 17th, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 21st, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Maple Grove Cemetery at St. John Church southwest of Tama. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until service time. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Lung Association for research in emphysema in Bob’s memory. Born Robert LaVerne Baker on April 25th, 1936, in Joy, IL., he was the son of Donald and Zelma Baker. He attended school in Tama, Iowa and graduated in 1954. In June of that same year, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. On May 10th, 1958, he was united in marriage to Carole Hill. In 1963, he graduated from the University of Iowa. He worked as personal director of Gra-Iron for four years and left to become safety director for Lennox.
While living in Marshalltown, Bob was manager for several Little League ball teams and was involved in Boy Scouting, the Marshalltown Jaycees and the Lennox Management Club.
Following Marshalltown, he moved to Braithwaite, LA. To be safety director for Amax Nicil Refinery and was the President of the Buccaneer Swim and Tennis Club. In 1977, he moved to Houston to become safety director at St. Regis Paper Company. Bob became interested in computers and left St. Regis to attend Control Data Institute in Houston. Upon graduation, he opened Hi-Tech Computer Repair in Houston.
They returned to Iowa where he worked for Pioneer, Farm and Home Supply and Stewart Lumber. Because of ill health, he retired in 1998.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Carole, sons; Christopher of LeGrand, Steven (Laura) of Albion, daughter-in-law Sherry of Marshalltown, grandchildren Erik (Brandi) Baker of Webster City, Jeremy, Matthew and Nicole of Marshalltown, and Kelli of Houston as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
