Thank you for your reply to my query. My ancestor Phillip Bailey McClain arrived in Marion County some time between 1830 and 1835, probably with his second wife, Rachel Jenkins. (His first wife, Mary "Polly" Edmiston, was apparently my ancestor who seems to have died before 1827; they were married in 1818 in Madison County, KY. Most researchers think she may have died in Hendricks County, Indiana.) No one is certain when she died. Phillip was a son of James W. McClain and Sarah Bailey. He had several brothers and sisters, many if not all of whom went to Marion County, so some of the children listed below may not have belonged in this family. The list of children, as I have it, is:

William Jackson McClain b. 1823 m. Martha Ann Tuttle (my gr-gr-grandparents)
Thomas McClain born 1825-30
Sarah McClain born abt 1828 m. Sol Middleworth
James M. McClain born 1827 m. Martha Jane Huron
Minerva McClain b. abt 1829 (not certain she belongs in this family)
Arthusia McClain b. 1829 m. Harmon Garrison
Nancy McClain m. John Slaughterback (not certain she belongs in this family)
Elizabeth Jane McClain b. 1830-35, m. Addison A. Garrison
John Wesley McClain b. 1834, m. Lucinda Saha
Jonathan McClain b. 1836, m. Melinda Fry
Richard b. abt 1838

It is interesting that Martha Ann Tuttle McClain's memoirs state that her husband's parents were Phillip McClain and Rachel Jenkins. Maybe his first wife died very young and there were no children of this marriage!!!

My Martha Ann Tuttle McClain and her husband "Jack" left Knoxville in April 1853 and crossed the plains on the Oregon Trail, settling first in Jacksonville, Oregon. Some years later they removed to Forest Grove, Multnomah County, Oregon, and finally moved to Columbus (now called Maryhill), Klickitat County, Washington where both died. He died in 1898 and she died in 1919.

Don Marsh who did extensive research on the McClains set up a very informative website with lots of information on it. I think it is still up, although Don died of cancer a few years ago and I don't know if anyone else has picked up his work. If you're interested, I'll try to dig up the URL address and you can see for yourself how much information he was able to gather. I spoke to him myself back in 1995 or so -- he was one of those "one line" researchers who dedicates his whole research to one name. (Unlike me, who tries to search every single one of my ancestral names.)

Send me an e-mail at sndshire@gorge.net if you want me to look up more information on Don Marsh's research.
