TUTTLE in Marion County, IA

TUTTLE, MCCLAIN, SLAUGHTERBACK

My gr-gr-grandmother Martha Ann Tuttle married William Jackson McClain at Knoxville, Marion County, IA on 2 July 1846. She apparently had a sister, Rosanna Caroline Tuttle, who married John Slaughterback at Knoxville on 20 March 1853. These families left Knoxville in April 1853 for Oregon, arriving at Jacksonville, OR on 7 October 1853. Who were the parents of Martha and Caroline? There were several Tuttles in the Knoxville area at the same time, for example:

Charles T. Tuttle, 1850 census
Catharine J. Tuttle, 1860 census, Franklin Twp.
Terry Tuttle, 1860 census, Franklin Twp.
David Tuttle, 1860 census, Pleasant Grove Twp.
John Tuttle, 1860 census, Union Twp.

Can anyone help me with this brick wall? According to the censuses, both Martha and Caroline were born in North Carolina. Martha's death certificate indicates her father was born in New York. An old biography mentions she was "of German extraction," which probably referred to her mother's line.

Thank you for any help --
